Beneath the skeletal moon at Lune

Cica Ghost’s latest build, Lune, opened on Mysterious Isle on 1 October 2026. Appropriately for October, it takes us into a strange Halloween landscape of skeletons, pumpkins, graveyards and twisting trees, although, as always with Cica, there is plenty of humour among the darker things.

As usual, the build is accompanied by a quotation:

“There is something haunting in the light of the moon.”
    Joseph Conrad

Before exploring, set your viewer to Shared Environment. Cica considers the lighting an essential part of her work, and at Lune it makes a considerable difference.

    Under a skeletal moon

Brown and orange dominate the landscape. The ground is comparatively flat for a Cica build, with just one of her familiar hills, and even that is modest by her usual standards. Look down occasionally and you will find fossils, shells and bones embedded in the earth beneath your feet.

Above it all hangs perhaps the most memorable feature of Lune, a great crescent moon made from bone. Behind it, the sky swirls in shades of orange and brown, giving the whole scene a restless, almost painted quality.

Near the landing point, rows of graves fill a small cemetery. Among them stands a horned skeleton, while a remarkably cute vampire bat hovers overhead. Elsewhere are strange pumpkin-like structures, abandoned-looking houses and a skeletal dragon looming across the landscape.

Then there are the trick or treaters.

Five small figures stand together looking just a little apprehensive about where they have found themselves. One of them seems to have something of Cica’s own wide-eyed appearance about her. Given what surrounds them, their uncertainty is understandable.

    Halloween, Cica style

Lune may be filled with skeletons, but it never becomes grim.

There is a wonderfully cheerful worm, signs for the tip jars appear on spades pushed up through the ground by skeletal arms, and even the worms apparently have skeletons. Cica herself was there during one of my visits, eccentrically dressed as usual and this time wearing roller boots.

The funny dances are back too, after being absent from Cica’s previous build.

There are also vehicles to try. A bat car and a slightly more gruesome bird skull car provide an entertaining way of getting around. Both come in versions for normal-sized avatars and smaller versions for Dinkies, a thoughtful touch given how popular Cica’s worlds have become with those mischievous little avatars.

On one visit I found myself trying the vehicles with fellow blogger Inara Pey. They are not necessarily the most dignified way of exploring Lune, but dignity is probably overrated here.

    Do not explore in silence

A special mention should go to the streaming music. It fits the strange autumnal atmosphere extremely well, so if you normally explore Second Life with music switched off, this is one occasion when it is worth turning it on.

I could continue listing skeletons, flowers, pumpkins, creatures and odd little discoveries, but that rather misses the point.

The pleasure of a Cica Ghost build lies in wandering around and gradually noticing things for yourself. Lune rewards that kind of exploration. Look upwards, look down at the ground, investigate the houses, try the dances and climb into one of the improbable vehicles.

It is spooky without being frightening, strange without being gloomy, and full of the gentle visual jokes that make Cica’s worlds so distinctive.

Take your time with Lune, and enjoy discovering what else she has hidden there.

    A small bonus destination

If you fancy one more piece of Cica after leaving Lune, there is a rather unexpected roadside discovery on the mainland.

On a small 1024 square metre parcel called EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED in Davos, owned by Pearl Hyacinth, Cica has placed an enormous wide-eyed monster beside the road, accompanied by a tiny house, flowers and, most importantly, a rather fetching pair of socks.

It is completely unexpected, slightly ridiculous, and well worth stopping for.
